The Grace Scholarship Program is the result of a partnership between PVF and a donor to provide the critical gap funding necessary for bright, low-income Zimbabwean students who are a part of the US Achievers Program (USAP) to study at US and European universities. We interview a few of the Grace Scholars each year to learn more about their background, experiences in college, and plans for the future. Below is our interview with Denzel Moyo, a student at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio.

Tell us about your decision to study outside of your home country.

I chose to study in the United States because of its focus on practical, flexible, and real-world education. In my home country, choosing a major is a binding decision; once declared, it’s set in stone until graduation. This system leaves little room for exploration or growth beyond a fixed path. The U.S., however, allows students to explore diverse fields and discover their true passions before fully committing. This flexibility does not only enrich learning but also encourages a deeper understanding of where your strengths and interests truly lie.

Was it difficult transitioning to a different culture?

Transitioning into a new culture comes with its own set of challenges, especially when adapting to unfamiliar cuisines. Adjusting to flavors, ingredients, and meals vastly different from what I was accustomed to in my home country was initially overwhelming.

Beyond that, coming from a culture with distinct communication styles posed challenges. Navigating new ways of expressing ideas, understanding social cues, and engaging in conversations required patience and adaptability. These differences can create barriers that take time to overcome.

Despite these challenges, I am proud to say I approached every obstacle with an open mind and a willingness to learn. This mindset has been the cornerstone of my smooth transition, allowing me to not only adapt but also thrive in this new environment.

What is your greatest accomplishment at school thus far?

Adjusting to college life in a new country is not so easy, and I take great pride in how well I’ve managed this transition. Moving to an entirely new environment, surrounded by unfamiliar faces and customs, initially felt overwhelming. Yet, with determination and an open mind, I’ve turned these challenges into opportunities for growth. I consider my ability to adapt, find support, and immerse myself in meaningful experiences my greatest accomplishment at school so far.

One of my first priorities was finding the resources and places on campus where I could get the help I needed. Whether it was academic support, counseling, or simply a welcoming space to ask questions, I made an effort to seek out these essential services. This proactive approach has been invaluable in navigating the demands of college life, ensuring that I stay on track academically and personally.

In addition to adjusting to the new life, I’ve embraced opportunities to participate in various service trips and volunteer activities. These experiences have been particularly rewarding, allowing me to give back to the community while forging connections with others who share my passion for making a difference.

How has the Grace Scholarship helped you pursue your goals?

The Grace Scholarship has been an invaluable pillar in my academic journey, providing me with the support and stability I need to focus on achieving my goals. By reducing the financial burden of tuition, this scholarship has not only opened the doors to higher education but also allowed me to fully immerse myself in my studies without the constant worry of how I would afford my education.

One of the most significant ways the Grace Scholarship has impacted my life is by giving me the freedom to concentrate on my academic success. Without the heavy weight of financial stress, I’ve been able to dedicate my energy to excelling in my coursework, exploring my passions, and pursuing meaningful learning opportunities. This focus has not only enriched my education but also strengthened my confidence as I work toward building a bright future.

The Grace Scholarship has granted me the precious gift of time, time that I would have otherwise spent seeking ways to cover my tuition. Instead of juggling multiple part-time jobs, I’ve been able to channel my efforts into personal growth, community engagement, and academic achievement.
