Fostering Mathmatical Understanding
PVF’s Mathmatics Teacher Resource Grants provide invaluable resources to infants, toddlers, and our youngest students, offering up to $500 to bring books, materials, and other manipulatives into the classroom to learn math through play.
PVF loves to hear from grantees, partner organizations, and teachers about their experiences. Read a letter from a 2nd grade teacher in San Mateo County who was awarded a Mathmatics Teacher Resource Grant to help her students foster mathematical understanding while strengthening their skills.
Dear Philanthropic Ventures Foundation,
I am deeply thankful for your generous support. The math grant you provided, funded by the Heising–Simons Foundation, has enabled me to purchase essential math manipulatives and storage solutions for my second–grade and math intervention classroom at Pescadero Elementary School. The following is a list of the specific items I was able to purchase:

- Balance Scale Math Game
- Number Dice
- Flat Marbles for Counting Collections
- Unifix Cubes
- 6 Qt. Plastic Storage Bins with Lids
- 12 Qt. Plastic Storage Bins with Lids Sterilite 6 Qt. Bins
The funding was crucial for enhancing my students‘ learning experience, particularly for those who struggle with understanding mathematical concepts. By providing them with hands–on resources such as number line floor mats, balance scale math games, and Unifix cubes, I was able to offer a more engaging and effective learning environment. The impact of this grant has been felt by my 32 students as they gain access to organized materials that promote interactive learning. I had multiple students express how they were able to “see numbers more clearly” now with the use of these manipulatives. The storage containers ensure that everything is easily accessible, allowing for seamless transitions during lessons. I have attached a few pictures of my students using the supplies from this math grant.
