REFLECTIONS FROM A GRACE SCHOLAR: JULIENNE NKANKA

In Grace Scholarship Program, non-profit, philanthropy, PVF News, scholarships

The Grace Scholarship Program is the result of a partnership between PVF and a donor to provide the critical gap funding necessary for bright, low-income Zimbabwean students who are a part of the US Achievers Program (USAP) to study at US and European universities. We interview a few of the Grace Scholars each year to learn more about their background, experiences in college, and plans for the future. Below is our interview with Julienne Nkanka, a student at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Tell us about your decision to study outside of your home country.

My decision to study outside of Zimbabwe was driven by the challenges I faced as a refugee trying to access higher education. Having lived as a refugee in Zimbabwe for the past 21 years, I have witnessed firsthand the difficulties that come with this status, especially when it comes to education and employment. In Zimbabwe, refugees are not allowed to work, which makes it nearly impossible to fund tertiary education.

Despite excelling academically in high school, my options for further studies were severely limited due to financial constraints. I knew that pursuing my degree outside of Zimbabwe would provide me with greater opportunities and the ability to access the resources necessary to achieve my dreams. Receiving the opportunity to study at Guilford College in the United States was a dream come true. It allowed me to continue my education in a supportive environment while also preparing me for a future where I can use my skills to uplift others.

Was it difficult transitioning to a different culture?

Surprisingly, transitioning to a different culture was not as difficult for me as it might have been for others. Having grown up in Zimbabwe, while being from the Democratic Republic of Congo I was already exposed to a diverse environment filled with people from different countries, including Burundi, Mozambique, Rwanda, and many others. Living in such a multicultural setting prepared me to adapt to different cultures, making my transition to life in the United States smoother than expected.

However, there were still some challenges, especially in adjusting to the academic system, social norms, and daily lifestyle differences. The educational approach at Guilford College is quite different from what I was used to, requiring me to develop new study habits and critical thinking skills but my time at USAP Community School gave me a great headstart. Socially, I had to navigate new customs but I always had an open mind and was willing to embrace change. Despite these initial challenges, I quickly found a sense of belonging within the Guilford College community. Engaging in various leadership programs and volunteer activities allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals who share my passion for making a difference. This sense of community has been instrumental in helping me feel at home, even though I am far from where I grew up.

What is your greatest accomplishment at school thus far?

Since joining Guilford College, I have achieved several significant milestones that I consider my greatest accomplishments. Academically, I have been named to the Dean’s List for 2024-2025, which reflects my dedication and commitment to excellence in my studies. Additionally, I am honored to be recognized as a PPS Scholar for 2024-2025, an Ethical Leadership Scholar, and a Quaker Leadership Scholar. These achievements reaffirm my commitment to academic success and leadership development. Beyond academics, I have been actively involved in various initiatives that align with my passion for advocacy and social change. One of my most exciting opportunities is representing Guilford College at the NCICU Ethics Bowl in 2025, where I will engage in critical discussions on ethical issues. I am also working on an Analytics Admissions Project, which allows me to apply my data analytics skills in a real-world setting. Additionally, my involvement in community service has been deeply fulfilling. I volunteer at ECAR(Every Campus A Refuge), an organization that supports refugees on campus, which resonates deeply with my own experiences. I also obtained a certificate in Alternatives to Violence Workshop, equipping me with valuable conflict resolution skills. Moreover, my participation in the Bryan Series has given me opportunities to interact with influential leaders and expand my knowledge in various fields. Each of these accomplishments represents my dedication to education, leadership, and service. They serve as a testament to the fact that, despite the challenges of being a refugee, I can still thrive and make a meaningful impact in my community.

How has the Grace Scholarship helped you pursue your goals?

The Grace Scholarship has been a crucial part of my educational journey, providing me with the financial support needed to pursue my degree in Data Analytics at Guilford College. As a refugee, accessing funding for higher education is one of the biggest challenges I have faced. Without the ability to work in Zimbabwe, saving money for college was nearly impossible. When I received the Grace Scholarship, it was truly a dream come true, as it allowed me to focus on my studies without the constant worry of financial instability. The scholarship has not only helped cover part of my tuition but has also assisted in paying for my medical insurance. This financial relief has allowed me to dedicate more time and energy to my academic and extracurricular pursuits rather than stressing about how to meet my basic needs. Beyond the financial assistance, the Grace Scholarship has also given me the motivation to strive for excellence. Knowing that there are people who believe in my potential and are willing to invest in my education has encouraged me to work even harder. I am determined to make the most of this opportunity. The Grace Scholarship has played an instrumental role in shaping my future. It has empowered me to pursue my dreams, develop my skills, and become a leader in my field. I am deeply grateful for this support, and I hope to use my education to give back to my community and advocate for other refugees who aspire to achieve their dreams.
