Reflecting on My First 6 Months at PVF: A Journey of Learning, Connection, and Growth
By Andrea Smith, Program and Communications Associate
Hi! My name is Andrea Smith and I’m the Program and Communications Associate at Philanthropic Ventures Foundation.
As I reflect on my first six months at PVF, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible experiences I’ve had, the relationships I’m building, and all that I’ve learned thus far. When I joined PVF, I was eager to begin my new role and take on new challenges. I was driven by my passion for both community engagement and the power of effective communication. I quickly realized that this position would be more than just sharing stories through our blogs, newsletters, and social media—it’s about amplifying the voices of those who are making a difference in the community, as well as connecting people to impactful initiatives and projects.
In my first few weeks, I immersed myself in understanding the depth of PVF’s work—its mission, the community-driven projects it supports, and the way it brings change-makers together across the Bay Area. Learning the ins and outs of the organization while contributing to communication strategies has been both exhilarating and challenging. Each project is a reminder of the importance of bridging communication gaps and ensuring that everyone, from our donors to community members, understands how we’re working to make a difference.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this role has been getting to know the vibrant and diverse communities we serve. PVF is dedicated to fostering connections that strengthen the fabric of the Bay Area, and through my role, I’ve had the privilege of engaging with some incredible initiatives. Among the many inspiring moments, a few stand out as particularly transformative.
I had the opportunity of attending the Annual YWCA Golden Gate Silicon Valley Inspire Luncheon, as a guest of the YWCA of the Mid Peninsula Donor Advised Fund, which we administer here at PVF. During the event I had the honor of meeting Ruby Bridges, a trailblazer and civil rights icon. Ruby’s story is one of courage, resilience, and hope. She made history at the age of 6 when she became the first African American child to integrate an all-white elementary school in New Orleans. To be in her presence was a humbling experience, and I was deeply moved by her unwavering commitment to justice and equity. Ruby Bridges’ legacy is a reminder that every step we take in advancing equity matters, no matter how big or small. I left that event inspired to continue advocating for social change in my own role and to amplify the voices of those who have been fighting for a better world long before us.
I also had the chance to explore a day in the life at two amazing organizations that we serve as their fiscal sponsors: Agency By Design Oakland and Civic Design Studio.
At Agency By Design Oakland’s Paper Circuit Event, I was introduced to a unique and hands-on opportunity to explore design thinking and how it can be applied in creative ways to solve community challenges. I was astonished by the ingenuity and energy in the room, where designers and artists were engaging in projects that fuse technology with art. It was eye-opening to see how these skills could be applied not only to design but to driving change and innovation in the community.
Another unforgettable experience was visiting the Civic Design Studio’s Sustainable Urban Design Fablab and the farm located at Castlemont High School. This was a powerful example of how young people are leading the charge in sustainable urban planning and agriculture. I witnessed firsthand how high school students were using design and technology to create solutions that could impact their community and beyond. Seeing their enthusiasm and the tangible results of their hard work made me feel hopeful for the future of our cities and our environment. The Fablab is a perfect example of how combining education, innovation, and community can result in lasting change.
I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of such a dynamic team and to work alongside people who are committed to the people and organizations we serve. I’ve been continuously inspired by the dedication and vision of my colleagues, who bring their expertise, creativity, and unique perspectives to everything they do.
As I kick off the new year, I’m looking forward to deepen my knowledge of the communities we serve, explore innovative solutions and, of course, sharing the stories of the people who are shaping the future of the Bay Area!
