On October 8th, the PVF team attended the Annual YWCA Golden Gate Silicon Valley Inspire Luncheon that took place at the Santa Clara Convention Center, uniting community members to address two pressing issues: eliminating racism and empowering women. This inspiring event featured the iconic Ruby Bridges as the keynote speaker who shared her powerful journey and emphasized the importance of resilience and unity in the fight for equality.

Ruby Bridges, born on September 8, 1954 in Tylertown, Mississippi, became a pivotal figure in the civil rights movement at just six years old. In 1960, she made history as the first African American child to integrate an all-white elementary school in New Orleans, Louisiana, amidst fierce opposition and hostility. At this time Ruby had no idea that she was changing the world through her journey as a young girl just going to school.

Her bravery on that historic day was not just a personal triumph, but a monumental step toward dismantling segregation in education. As Ruby walked through the gauntlet of angry protestors, she embodied the struggle for civil rights, demonstrating the profound impact one child can have on the fight for justice.

We are grateful we had the opportunity to attend the YWCA luncheon to hear her speak about inspiring leaders, showing your heart and never dismissing the sacrifices that were made for us to be where we are today. Together, we celebrated progress, ignited inspiration, and committed to creating a future free from discrimination.

During the luncheon, funds were raised to go towards the YWCA GGSV’s mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. The YWCA Golden Gate Silicon Valley is one of the first multi-service agencies in the Bay Area rooted in the Theory of Change which requires a continuum of response to the challenges of racism, sexism, and gender-based violence. They offer direct services to meet immediate needs, issue education to change hearts and minds in local communities, and legislative advocacy to change the rules and systems in order to achieve greater equity and justice for all.

As we reflect on the powerful messages shared at the YWCA luncheon, it’s clear that the fight for equality and empowerment, especially for women and girls, is far from over. Did you know that nearly 50,000 organizations in the U.S. are dedicated to women and girls, yet they consistently receive less than 2% of all charitable giving, according to research by the Women’s Philanthropy Institute?

Today marks the 3rd annual Give to Women and Girls Day, a groundbreaking effort to increase funding for women’s and girls’ organizations and change this statistic, launched by the Women’s Philanthropy Institute in 2022.

In supporting women and girls, we can amplify their voices and ensure they have the resources and opportunities they deserve. This is not just about funding; it’s about creating a culture that values and uplifts the contributions of women in all spheres of life. By actively choosing to support organizations like our local YWCAs or Ruby Bridges’ own foundation, we can play a part in shifting the narrative and breaking down barriers that hold back half of our population.

Let’s commit to being allies in this crucial journey. We can advocate for policies that prioritize funding for women’s organizations, mentor young girls in our communities, and create spaces where their ideas and aspirations can flourish. Together, we can champion equity, encourage resilience, and foster a sense of belonging for every woman and girl.

The call to action is clear: let’s invest our time, resources, and passion into uplifting those who have been historically marginalized. By doing so, we not only honor the sacrifices made by pioneers like Ruby Bridges, but we also pave the way for future generations to thrive in a world where equality is not just an aspiration, but a reality. Let’s stand together and ensure that the fight for justice, dignity, and empowerment continues, today and every day.
